ADHD Awareness Month: Understanding, Assessing and Supporting ADHD

BY: Bloomfield Health / October 1, 2025

October is ADHD Awareness Month – a time to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and highlight the importance of access to effective assessment and treatment for individuals living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. It is characterised by difficulties with attention, concentration, organisation, and impulse control. For some, hyperactivity and restlessness are more prominent; for others, inattentiveness
and mental fatigue are the main challenges.

While ADHD is present in childhood, we now know that many people are undiagnosed and might be experiencing difficulties that go unrecognised. With no support, ADHD can affect education, employment, relationships, and overall mental health.

Why Awareness Matters

Research shows that ADHD is underdiagnosed in adults, and many individuals only seek help after years of struggling with anxiety, low mood, or difficulties at work. Awareness campaigns such as ADHD Awareness Month play a vital role in challenging stereotypes
– ADHD is not simply about being “distracted” or “overactive”; it is a complex condition requiring careful understanding.

Assessment at Bloomfield Health

At Bloomfield Health, we have extensive experience in the comprehensive assessment of ADHD in both adults and young people. Our assessments follow NICE guidelines and include:

  • A detailed clinical interview exploring developmental, educational, occupational, and social history.
  • Standardised questionnaires and rating scales.
  • Consideration of co-existing conditions such as anxiety, depression, or autism spectrum disorder.
  • Liaison with other professionals (e.g. GPs or employers) where appropriate.

The aim is to provide a clear, evidence-based diagnosis that helps individuals understand their strengths and challenges.

Treatment and Support

Effective ADHD care goes beyond diagnosis. At Bloomfield Health, treatment plans are tailored to each individual and may include:

  • Medication: Prescribed in line with NICE recommendations, with careful monitoring.
  • Psychological therapies: Such as CBT to address negative thought patterns and coping strategies.
  • Coaching and skills-based interventions: Supporting organisation, time management, and focus.
  • Occupational or educational guidance: Helping patients thrive in work or study settings.

Our team adopts a holistic, person-centred approach that recognises both the challenges and the unique strengths associated with ADHD, such as creativity, problem-solving, and energy.
