Family Therapy

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is a form of talking therapy that supports families to better understand one another, improve communication, and navigate challenges together. It provides a safe, structured space for exploring how relationships and patterns within the family affect individual and shared wellbeing.

Who is Family Therapy for?

Family therapy is for families of all shapes and sizes. It can include parents, children, siblings, carers, partners, and even extended family. It’s particularly helpful when:

  • There are repeated arguments or communication breakdowns

  • A child or adult is struggling with mental health or neurodivergence

  • The family is facing a big transition (e.g. illness, divorce, loss, moving)

  • There’s been trauma, secrecy, or rupture in family relationships

  • Parents feel unsure how to support a young person

  • Siblings are struggling to connect or understand each other

  • Behavioural challenges, school refusal, or emotional outbursts are impacting home life

  • Families want to strengthen trust and resilience

Family therapy works with the idea that mental health is shaped by — and shapes — relationships. It’s especially supportive for neurodivergent individuals, blended or intercultural families, and those navigating systemic challenges.

What does Family Therapy involve?

  • Sessions usually last 60–90 minutes

  • Everyone in the family is welcome — participation is flexible

  • Focus on improving communication and emotional connection

  • Exploring family roles, dynamics, and unspoken patterns

  • Supporting one another through transitions, crises, or grief

  • Working with shared goals set by the family

  • Tools for listening, boundary-setting, and problem-solving

  • Psychoeducation about mental health, neurodivergence, or trauma

  • Naming and understanding intergenerational or cultural dynamics

  • May include art, storytelling, or visual tools (especially for young people)

  • Regular reviews of progress and feedback

  • Suitable for in-person or online sessions

  • Respectful of different parenting styles, identities, and cultures

  • Trauma-informed and non-blaming

  • Often used alongside individual therapy or psychiatric care
