Trauma-focussed CBT

What is Trauma-Focused CBT?

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps people process and recover from trauma. It gently supports you in understanding how trauma has affected your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours — and offers tools to feel safer, calmer, and more in control.

Who is Trauma-Focused CBT for?

TF-CBT is suitable for adults, teens, and children who’ve experienced trauma — whether from a single event or repeated exposure. It’s particularly effective for:

  • PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

  • Complex trauma (including childhood abuse or neglect)

  • Domestic violence or coercive control

  • Sexual assault or exploitation

  • Traumatic loss or serious accidents

  • Medical trauma or childbirth-related trauma

  • Refugee or migration-related trauma

  • Vicarious trauma (e.g. healthcare or frontline workers)

It’s also helpful when trauma has led to anxiety, hypervigilance, flashbacks, emotional numbness, or avoidance. TF-CBT can be adapted for neurodivergent individuals, people with dissociation, and those with overlapping mental health challenges.

What does Trauma-Focused CBT involve?

  • Thorough, trauma-informed assessment

  • Weekly 1:1 sessions (typically 50–60 minutes)

  • Psychoeducation about trauma and the nervous system

  • Building coping skills (e.g. grounding, breath work, self-soothing)

  • Gradual, supported trauma processing using CBT techniques

  • Identifying unhelpful beliefs (e.g. “It was my fault,” “I’m never safe”)

  • Reframing shame, guilt, or distorted meanings

  • Imagery rescripting or narrative exposure (if appropriate)

  • Managing flashbacks, nightmares, and avoidance

  • Stabilisation before any memory work

  • Homework to practise skills and track progress

  • Suitable for online or in-person delivery

  • Trauma-informed pace — no pressure to “go deep” before readiness

  • Adapted for neurodivergent clients and those with dissociation

  • Can be combined with EMDR, medication, or other therapies

Our approach

Our approach to Trauma-Focused CBT

At Bloomfield Health, we take a calm, compassionate approach to trauma work. Our clinicians are trained in TF-CBT and skilled at working gently, without re-traumatising or rushing the process. We adapt each session to your needs — whether you’re newly diagnosed with PTSD, living with long-standing trauma, or unsure where to begin. We are neurodiversity-affirming, culturally sensitive, and committed to building emotional safety and trust as the foundation of all trauma recovery.

TF-CBT focuses specifically on trauma, using tailored tools to process memories, shift beliefs, and manage trauma symptoms safely.
