Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Symptoms may include difficulty focusing, disorganization, restlessness, and interrupting others. ADHD can impact education, work, and relationships but responds well to treatment, including behavioral strategies, therapy, and, when appropriate, medication to enhance focus and self-regulation.

“Living with ADHD felt chaotic—constant distractions, unfinished tasks, and frustration. With therapy and medication, I’ve learned to manage my focus and energy, turning challenges into strengths. Life feels more organized and fulfilling now.”

Different types of ADHD

In undiagnosed adults, ADHD often manifests as persistent difficulties with focus, organization, and time management, leading to frustration in work, relationships, and daily life. Adults may struggle with forgetfulness, procrastination, impulsivity, or an inability to complete tasks. Hyperactivity in adults can appear as inner restlessness or a constant need to stay busy. Emotional dysregulation, such as intense frustration or impatience, is also common.

ADHD is categorized into three types:

  1. Predominantly Inattentive Type: Difficulty sustaining attention, frequent forgetfulness, disorganization, and losing items. Often mistaken for carelessness or lack of effort.
  2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: Fidgeting, excessive talking, impulsive decisions, and difficulty waiting in line or sitting still.
  3. Combined Type: A mix of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, creating more pronounced challenges in managing everyday responsibilities.

Understanding these types helps tailor treatment, including therapy, coaching, and medication, for optimal outcomes.

“Assessing and treating ADHD is incredibly rewarding. Identifying the condition provides clarity, and tailored treatments—like therapy, coaching, and medication—help patients unlock potential, improve focus, and transform challenges into strengths, leading to meaningful, lasting improvements in their lives.”
