Dr Lucy Stephenson

Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist and Psychodynamic Psychotherapist

I am a Consultant Psychiatrist with additional expertise in psychotherapy, ethics, and law. My practice centres around a fundamental belief that mental health difficulties impact the whole person—body, mind, and social worlds. I am committed to offering a supportive, holistic approach which integrates medical, psychiatric, and psychotherapeutic perspectives.

In my clinical practice, I support adults with a wide range of mental health difficulties, including common conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, and relationship difficulties, as well as more complex presentations including eating disorders, mood disorders, and enduring emotional difficulties.

I studied medicine at University College London and psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital. I hold degrees in Philosophy and a PhD in ethics and law from King’s College London, which led to multiple publications. During this PhD I worked with people who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder to pioneer Advance Choice Documents for crisis care. I gained additional training in Medical Psychotherapy at the Maudsley Hospital and Lambeth Secondary Care Psychological Therapies team.

In the NHS, I work as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Maudsley Hospital Eating Disorder Service, where I assess and treat conditions including binge eating, bulimia, and anorexia. I offer evidence-based psychological therapies such as CBT for Eating Disorders and specialist supportive clinical management. I am also part of the Complex Life and Death Decisions research group at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience and enjoy supervising and teaching future psychiatrists.

At Bloomfield Health, I also act as the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian, helping to foster an open, transparent culture where patients and staff feel able to raise concerns and contribute to continuous improvement in care. I also offer psychodynamic case consultation within the team at Bloomfield Health, helping to bring deeper psychological understanding to patient care and ensure a thoughtful, joined-up approach to treatment.
